Where do Unicorns live?

Unicorns are such special creatures, many different cultures have written about them throughout history.

Unicorns can be found anywhere in the world because they live in the wonderful realms of the imagination. Those amazing creatures live in forests, mountains, meadows, and over the rainbows. As well they live in our hearts and minds as well inĀ books,Ā filmsĀ and our pictures.

The internet is full of images,Ā memesĀ and videos of unicorns. We love to read about them and watch them. If youā€™re lucky, perhaps youā€™ve seen one inĀ unicorn dreamsĀ or peeping around the borders of the imagination and into the real world.

So where can be unicorns found?

Unicorns can be found almost everywhere: they are hiding in the forests and mountains as well just running on the green fields and meadows. Nowadays unicorns you can also be found from the rainbows as there are also unicorn-lookalikes who live underwater and in the savannah.

LetĀ“s look them closer!

Unicorns Hiding In The Forests

ManyĀ unicorns live in forests, where there are plenty of berries and nuts and fruits to eat and lakes to drink water from. In case you are interested about the food table of unicorns, we have also written an aticleĀ what do unicorns eat and drink.

The trees offer them shelter from the wind and the rain, and help them to hide from predators.

Unicorns areĀ shy creatures, so they like to beĀ able to disappear quicklyĀ if somebody they do not want to see ventures their way. They can melt into the shadows of the forests and vanish faster than thinking.

These amazing beasts are so agile that they canĀ effortlessly dodge and dart around the tall trunks. This makes it easy for them to outrun anyone trying to follow them. Their strong legs and nimble hooves keep them from tripping on uneven ground or tree roots.

We all know the mystical pictures of unicorns grazing at dawn, perhaps sipping cool water from the edge of a lake. Surrounded by the dark trunks of ancient trees, they seem to glow in the dim light. It may be that the age of forests increases the chance of unicorns wanting to live there.

The trees are full of wisdom and memory, and theĀ unicorns can find peace and solitude in forests.

Unicorns Of The Mountains

Unicorn Peak. One of the many mountains where unicorns wander around.

LearnAboutRareUnicorns says thatĀ unicorns live in the mountains, where they can feed on the tops of rainbows. MostĀ unicorns canā€™t fly and donā€™t have wings, so it makes sense that they would need to climb mountains if they are to enjoy this rare delicacy. Rainbows arenā€™t common, so many unicorns come together when there is one to feed on.

Unicorns in the mountains must be particularly agileĀ so they do not stumble on the treacherous rocks and difficult pathways. They will have less spaces to hide in, so they have to be more vigilant about anybody approaching. Running away is not so easy on a mountaintop.

If you have ever seen the way mountain goats are able to negotiate a nearly sheer cliff-face, you will have some idea of how unicorns can climb when they need to. With the sunlight flashing on their bright coats, they can escape even the quickest of mountain predators. I always imagine the Eyrie from the Game of Thrones when thinking about the unicorns of the mountains.

Caves to Hide and Shelter

Mountains offerĀ caves where unicorns can hide and shelter from bad weather. Unicorns which live in the mountains will often have one or two different caves which they retreat to when they feel threatened or if there is a storm brewing. There are no rainbows to eat when itā€™s raining hard, so they can go and rest until the bad weather passes and thereā€™s some sunshine to mingle with the rain.

Unicorns Of The Meadows

AĀ meadow is perhaps the most obvious place you would imagine a unicorn living in.Ā The sweeping green hills and gently rolling valleys are ideal for grazing animals of all kinds. Wildflower meadows positively invite these silver creatures to roll around and sun themselves. With butterflies and crickets and little birds, how could a place be more perfect for a peaceful creature like a unicorn?

The open spaces of meadows also offer unicorns a chance to do what they do better than any other animal in the world: run. We have all seen horses galloping across a wide expanse of land. We have seen how horsesā€™ muscles bunch and dip, and how their manes and tails stream out in the wind as they taste their freedom and power.

A unicorn is far swifter than a horse. They are the quickest of all creatures. They canĀ plunge across open grassland as fast as rivers, glittering like silver in the sunshine. Effortless, they can cover miles in moments, leaving barely a print in the grass behind them.

In the meadows, there is moreĀ space for unicorns to form herdsĀ (orĀ blessingĀ as it is said about the group of unicorns), and there isĀ plenty to eat. The sun-sweet grass is perfect for unicorns, and there is lots of it. Young and old unicorns alike can survive here. There are no difficult cliffs, although they cannot reach the tops of rainbows to nibble.

Sadly,Ā meadows do not have much shelter for unicorns. There are no trees and no caves for them to hide in. If the weather is bad, many unicorns will need to move out of the meadows and find somewhere they can rest without getting wet or cold. This might be in a surrounding forest where you can find unicorns then instead.

When the sun comes out again, however, you can be sure that the unicorns will be back to crop the grass and prance in the warmth.

On clear nights, they like to stay up late andĀ watch the stars, perhaps dozing in theĀ pale moonlight and enjoying the cool feel of the grass beneath their bodies.

Some unicorns live on rainbows

Unicorns who Live in the Rainbows

These days unicorns also live on colorful Rainbows. It can take some magic and real imagination to see those lovely fluffy unicorns dancing over the rainbow and enjoy their life however rainbows are the places when quite a lot of unicorns for kids as well for grown ups can be found.

Unicorns love their mysterious home on rainbows since is so colorful and magical. It is also really hard to track for the enemies as well it is not possible for any other creatures to really simply walk on the rainbow-bridge. Unicorns feel themselves safe and happy over the rainbows and love to bring the joy and happiness whenever the sun and rain both share the sky: it is such a wonderful moment.

So whenever you see the rainbow, take a closer look. It is very likely you see the herd (or blessing) of unicorns enjoying the color showā€¦ and even there are not plenty of them, there is always some curious unicorn that is carefully taking the stroll and can be theĀ symbol of a great luck.

Other Unicorns Of The World ā€“ Where Else to Find Unicorns?

You might have heard about the unicorn lookalikes that also walk our world. In the past, some of these have been mistaken for unicorns themselves. As MentalFloss reminds us,Ā Marco Polo supposedly thought rhinoceros were unicorns. He was very disappointed that they did not look as he had imagined. If you compare a hulking rhino to the slim white beauty of a unicorn, you might be able to see why!

Rhinos are often associated with unicorns, mostly because of their horns.

Rhinos as Chubby Unicorns

TheĀ rhinoĀ was compared to the unicorn because of its single horn, but it is hard to see what else it might have had in common. Rhinos arenā€™t silver or white, they donā€™t have flowing manes, and their heavy, armored bodies are not nimble.

They are beautiful animals in their own right, but Marco Polo was probably not alone in thinking they did not exactly look the way he would expect unicorns to look. But still: a million-dollar question:Ā Are Rhinos just Fat Unicorns?

Narwhals ā€“ Sea Unicorns

Narwhals are the closest animals which we can currently see which look like unicorns, and I think they are beautiful creatures. This is also the reason, we have previously written a separateĀ article about Narwhals and their relation to unicorns.

Unicorn of the Sea: Narwhal
Unicorn of the Sea: Narwhal

Narwhals are sleek and agile, and a breathtaking pure white and live in the deep waters of the ocean. They dwell in frigid seas, group into big family herds, and sport with their ā€œhorns,ā€ which are now more often called ā€œtusks.ā€

The calm grace with which they drift through the water could easily be compared with aĀ unicornā€™s agility and elegance on land. Their ability to disappear into the depths is much like a unicornā€™s skill in vanishing.

Finally, narwhals seem to belong to two worlds at once, existing between the air they need to breathe and the water they need to swim in, just as unicorns are often able toĀ transcend boundaries between worlds.

Many people sought to ownĀ narwhal horns, believing they could bring the luck and healing associated with unicorn horns. This was not good for the narwhals, which were hunted and trapped and killed. MentalFloss says narwhal horns were still being sold as unicorn horns as late as 1741. I feel sorry for the narwhals!

Unicorns Who Lives in Stories

Book "The Last Unicorn" by Peter S Beagle

Narwhals may have inspired part of the story ofĀ The Last Unicorn. In this story, theĀ unicorns had been driven into the sea by an evil kingĀ who wanted to keep them all to himself, because looking at them was the only thing which brought him joy. The unicorns were trapped in the waves, afraid to come out.

Perhaps when you look at the sea, you can catch glimpses ofĀ unicorns dancing in the waves. It seems a beautiful place for them to live, full of fun and energy, and yet also dangerously powerful and unpredictable. The sea is wild and impossible to catch, so unicorns might feel very at home there, safe in the waves and visible for moments in the sparkling foam as it rises and crashes upon the beaches.

If unicorns live among the waves, it would explain why they are soĀ hidden from our world. The deep waters hold many mysteries we have yet to uncover, and the constantly changing wildness of the water would be perfect for sheltering these beautiful creatures from harm. The Last Unicorn is also visible as one of aĀ unicorn moviesĀ we suggest you to see.

Perhaps next time you are out at sea or playing on a beach, you will spot the sparkling brilliance of a pearly coat or the flash of silver hooves, and you will know the unicorns are at play against the sand.
